Bank holidays are an ideal time to get away and try something new, so don't just sit there watching TV on your next bank holiday, get outside and do something new.
Bank holidays have been used in the UK since 1781, and if you're lucky enough to have a day off because of a bank holiday, you may be tempted to stay in your house, and watch TV. While there are usually good films on the TV on a bank holiday, that doesn't mean that you have to stay indoors all day, so record the films you want to watch and get outside.
One problem that many people find when they have a bank holiday, is that they just don't know what to do with this extra free time off. As many businesses do close on a bank holiday, it can also be difficult to know just you can do on this day, however, in this situation, a bit of preparation can go a long way. So if you know you have a bank holiday coming up, start looking at all the possible things that you can do, such as going to the cinema, going sightseeing, taking a long drive somewhere, or maybe just treating yourself to some new clothes.
Whatever you decide you want to do, you have to start planning a few weeks in advance, because while some businesses may close for the day on a bank holiday, others may stay open, and will therefore be much busier than they usually are. So if you're thinking about going somewhere that is ticketed, such as the cinema, the theatre or an outdoor event make sure that you have bought your tickets well in advance, to ensure that you won't be disappointed on the day. If you're not doing anything that requires a ticket, such as shopping or sightseeing, it's worth researching if your chosen shopping centre or landmark, to see what their opening hours are.
Some people prefer to use their bank holiday as an excuse to take a long weekend off somewhere, such as going on a city break, whether at home or abroad. Bank holidays can be the ideal time to travel to another city, but as with going to the cinema and the theatre, you must get in there early in order to secure your tickets for travel and booking your hotel. If you;re planning on driving to another city, such as Manchester, London or Glasgow, bear in mind that the roads will probably be full of other people doing the exact same things as you, so make sure you leave early, with plenty of time to get to your destination. Also make sure that you have a map with you route clearly marked out, and a Sat Nav if possible, as this will make sure that you won't get lost during your journey.
A bank holiday really is a rare treat, so make sure that you're not left with nothing to do on the actual day. Remember to try to think outside of the box and see what you can do, and what you can find by going out of your comfort zone; look into visiting a part of your home town that you've never paid much attention to before, go shopping to find a new outfit, or perhaps you can really push the boat out and book a little holiday to another city, perhaps in another country, or in another city. Whatever you do, just make sure that you are well prepared, and that you've booked your tickets or looked into what
hotels in Glasgow or elsewhere to stay at.
