Realising that you've forgotten to buy a present for someone is embarrassing, but you can recover from this, and you can produce a gift in record time if you try hard enough. So here are a few tips to help you avoid this major social faux pas.
We've all been there, we've been presented with a Christmas or a birthday gift from someone we weren't expecting one from, or someone you don't know very well. If it's a birthday present, then you're not expected to give them a present right back, because it (hopefully) won't be their birthday until later in the year. However, if you are given an unexpected at a big gathering or celebration, such as at Christmas or Easter, then you will need to find them a gift pretty quickly.
Of course the most reasonable thing to do would be to thank them and apologise for not having a gift for them, but if this is the option you choose, then you must tread carefully. Promising them a present that you've conveniently 'left at home', can come back to haunt you. So if you feel you can be honest, then be as honest as possible; thank them profusely for their gift and explain that you haven't bought them a present yet. This will probably be a little white lie, but it will buy you a little time, and stop you from having to frantically find a gift, or worse still, reusing a present that you've been given.
Some people find that buying lots of little gifts, such as boxes of chocolates and other little trinkets, and keeping them in their home can be very useful for dealing with this occurrence. However, it can be very difficult to be that organised, and let's face it, having stray boxes of chocolates and other goodies around your house can be very dangerous, and can lead to temptation. So, what can you do? Well, the simple answer is, you need to buy something in return for the gift, and if it's a busy time, such as at Christmas, then you'll know that it's very difficult to get a good last-minute gift. So look online, and see what's available to you. Online stores can be very reliable around Christmas time, and they can also be very good value for money when compared to normal high street shops, so see what you can get.
If you're unsure of what to buy them, then a gift like food, such as chocolates, treats, biscuits and alcohol usually go down a treat with many people, so see what food presents you can get, such as a chocolate selection, or even a hamper that's full of gourmet and tasty delights. If you're not sure, then go for something simple, such as a voucher for a well-known shop, the chances are that they will appreciate getting a voucher, because it will mean that they can use it to buy something they really like.
Finding a last minute gift can be difficult, especially if you don't know the person, but that doesn't mean it has to be impossible. So whether you buy them a voucher, give them some money or splash out on food
hampers, make sure that you present them with a gift that's as thoughtful as the one they gave to you.
