Do you or your partner have jobs that require relocating to a new city or country every so often? Many transnational companies are keen on sending employees to offices abroad to gain experience, get a deeper insight into how to the business works, and meet colleagues and clients. Or perhaps you’ve chosen a career in diplomacy or a worldwide charity. Whatever the case, moving house is never an easy task. Many people dread the thought of having to pack their lives away only to unpack them again a while later in a new home. Start planning your move in advance and you’ll find it goes a lot smoother than if you bundle everything up at the last minute and discover half your belongings have either been left behind or are broken. There are also certain ideas you can consider for acquiring less belongings in the first place.

How to Acquire Less ‘Stuff’

Most people leading a lifestyle on the go rent apartments or get accommodation provided for them by their employers. If possible, choose a fully furnished property with kitchenware supplied. Although the furniture may not be completely to your liking, this approach will let you save a lot of effort and money on removal services. Existing furniture can be personalised with home accessories. Cover sofas with throws, tables with tablecloths and cupboards with posters or photos of your friends and family back home. Flowers and potted plants instantly cheer up bland spaces too. If you really lack something, be sure to buy from cheap retailers like IKEA so you don’t mind leaving the item behind before your next move.

Although it’s not pleasant living with the constant thought that you’ll be moving again after a while, be rational. Don’t splurge on things you’ll only need to get rid of due to the lack of space in your suitcase and boxes. Make wise clothing decisions. Choose versatile items like black trousers and skirts that can be both dressed up or down. Invest in timeless pieces like block-coloured cocktail dresses or simple suits that can be made to look different every time you wear them with a bit of clever accessorising. Outerwear is a tough one as you could be moving from a cold to a hot climate or vice versa. In these cases consider the noble thing and donate heavy coats, woollens and boots to charity. If you ever move back to a cold country, buy second hand items yourself to save money.

Making the Big Move

It’s important to choose the best available form of transport in terms of luggage allowances. Don’t try to save pennies by flying with a low-cost airline as you’ll only end up paying excruciating amounts for excess luggage or, alternatively, leaving a stack of belongings in the airport bin.

Use practical suitcases and boxes for packing your things and remember to wrap fragile items. If you have too many things to take with you on the plane, train, bus or ship, use a professional removals service to get your belongings safely delivered to your new home.
Pack wisely, discarding items you’re only holding onto for sentimental purposes. If you really don’t want to get rid of certain things, but can’t justify taking them with you to your new home, think about cheap parcel delivery services to send your belongings to friends or family back home who could store it for you until your eventual return. These services are also good to keep in mind if you’ve forgotten something in your old home.
