Getting online is easy, but learning to navigate the internet can be a little overwhelming if you don't know where to start, or which sites to visit. But help is at hand, and if you're serious about learning about the internet, here are a few tips.

From sending emails to sharing pictures, stories, news and just about anything else on social networking sites, the internet is one of the most amazing and also the most baffling inventions of the last century. While many of us were initially unsure about jumping on the modem bandwagon, the internet has quickly become one of the essential parts of modern living, with online access being standard in most homes, businesses and cafés across the UK. But for absolute beginners the web can be a very overwhelming and frightening place to be, especially if you don't know which sites to go to, or which sites are the most trustworthy. However, these simple tips can help you make the most out of your online experience, and what's more, they're free.

One of the first things you must do when you first have the internet installed in your home or place of work, is to educate yourself on how it works, the different ways it can be used, and of course, how to protect yourself online, especially if you plan on making purchases at online shops. Many colleges and night schools offer short course in computing and online skills, so head along to somewhere like your local community centre, church or your library and see what classes are on offer. These classes will normally be free of charge to attend, but some might charge a small fee, so make sure that you find out how much the classes are before you enrol.

One thing that you'll find really useful when starting to use the internet is a search engine, and you'll have probably heard the names of the most popular search engines, such as Google, Bing and Yahoo! Used in everyday conversations. A search engine is a really magical tool, because it helps you find what you're look for online, such as certain sites and forums to specific retailers and other sites. So if you're looking for something, type the name of it or the name of a place into Google or any other search engine, and see how you get on from there.

Once you've mastered the basics, the best thing to do is start going online, only to sites you know and trust, such as your email or a news site and see where they take you. Don't try to do anything too advanced at first, just start slowly and build up your confidence until you can navigate the internet comfortably. Once you've reached this point, you can now start surfing the net to your heart's content, and use it to keep in touch with the people you love, locate people you've lost touch with, find a job, book a holiday or just find out valuable information on a subject that you want to know more about. So, from homes for sale, to pets, to clothing and even ATM software, there's something online that everyone can enjoy, and all this information is just a keystroke away. So lose the fear, get online and find out everything you need to know about the internet and all the sites on it.
