When traveling abroad, for a holiday or business trip there are several things that must be considered to ensure you don't become victim to the current roaming charges that exist when visiting another country. When asked many people would not know that price it costs to text or phone whilst in another country, not including the data cost per megabyte download.
The first thing you do when landing is get in touch with family or anyone you have left behind, and cost is never something that is priority. This can then extend to contacting people on a daily basis throughout the duration of the trip. By simply preparing before leaving and checking your current tariffs and charges that will apply to the country you will be traveling to can help save yourself a lot of money and frustration when you return.
Currently, there is a cap in place when making a call to another country within the EU of roughly 31p per minute, text messages are also capped at 10 per text message. The main problem that you will have to watch out for is the data roaming charges. Because there is currently no cap, many providers may by default include a maximum limit that may have to be changed I required but it will still be a much greater figure than your current monthly bill. The current average for a megabyte download has been stated by the European Commission to cost £2. With no sign of change until 2014, the European Commission has recently created a proposal that will help make roaming costs much similar to the costs at home.
With the extensive availability of Apps that now require an internet connection which may catch many people out, it is vital that you know your tariff and foreign charges that may be in place.
Also, if looking a cheap way to have people you know contact you whilst on holiday then there are many companies that offer cheap calls from a UK land line or if required cheap calls from mobiles. Also note that it won't cost you anything to receive calls whilst abroad.
Therefore, there is a few easy steps to follow that can help save you money and from falling into the trap that many people fall into year after year:
- When visiting any major city or tourist spots there will most likely be a wide range of WI-FI hot spots to choose from and ensure you can use the internet and make the most of any Apps and find out local information. Or simply use email to stay in touch as an alternative to texting.
- Check with your operator before leaving and find out what the charges will be for calls, texts and online data charges. This way you can work out the most economic way of contacting loved ones whilst on your travels.
- Consider purchasing a local SIM card. Although effective it will require using a new mobile phone number and that your phone is unlocked to accept other networks.
- Lastly, try searching for 'Traveler' or 'Passport' tariffs that can help make it a cost effective option if keeping in touch regularly is key.
