The demand for mobile data is on the increase and the country's thirst for information and communication is at it's peak. As social networks continue to accrue hundreds of millions of users and with around 1 in 4 American's watching a YouTube video everyday it must be accepted that not only is it here to stay but expectations are likely to increase further. But with unlimited data plans comes limitations, not widely known.
Bringing us to the decision that has to be made once every 18 to 24 months, is that dreaded decision on the contract we will choose and have to stick by. For the majority the main issue is the price. With handsets becoming ever more complex and sophisticated the issue of having to pay for the handset along with a high monthly price can be a common occurrence. With the iPhone and many other quality handsets now expecting a minimum £35 monthly contract along with around £99 for the handset. With many opting for over £40-45 per month for a free handset.
Each person will have their individual preferences that will heavily affect the monthly tariff. For example if the preference is towards data usage then the amount of texts and call time will be greatly sacrificed unless these are required also, in that case monthly bills can easily reach £40 per month.
So when buying an unlimited contract, in terms of unlimited data use, unlimited texts and unlimited calls, what are consumers actually able to use?. According to the Committee of Advertising Practice has declared that it's right for mobile phone companies to describe a service as unlimited even if this cannot be met. With the caveat that the limitations and restrictions are clearly stated and must not apply to the typical user. With each contract where unlimited is stated there will be a fair usage policy that applies. Limiting the amount of data the can be used. Many networks will then take several steps when this allowance is used and this can range from denying any further access, limiting the pages viewable and also limiting the data transfer speeds.
For many other people who have learned the hard way, it's possible that once passing the fair use policy for data, calls or even texts charges may apply to those above the recommended allowance. An occurrence that will no doubt be highly inadvisable with bills previously seen to surpass £100 for even minimal overuse.
But, with mobile phone users increasing every day and the demand for data online is increasing the networks are unable to keep up with demand and making it difficult to determine the typical user. As technology becomes a part of every day life where mobile phones are becoming as powerful as desktop computers the ability to not only save us time each day with the use of applications but also save money when making now possible, cheap calls to USA, France and even India for example.
Along with apps requiring data and internet streaming, users must make sure that they always read the small print whenever seeing the term unlimited. To ensure that they are happy with the arrangements. Because in several months time a certain application or website not currently used may become an issue, causing large data spikes. Until the networks are able to meet actual demand, most mobile services will remain far from unlimited and by being thorough can help prevent any nasty surprises down the line.
Each user can take action and prevent the likely hood of going above any fair usage policy by monitoring their usage. Most networks provide information on data consumption along with text and minute usage. Most smart phones have apps created by the networks to help make this even simpler. By simply searching app stores it's possible to find a wide variety of data monitoring apps that can help provide real time information.
