With a population of approximately 46,000 people, Lancaster is only one tenth the size of Liverpool, but with a history to match. Situated on the River Lune, Lancaster is the county town of Lancashire, and has been dubbed "the hanging town" for its sinister reputation of having hanged more people than any town outside London.
The castle in the town dates back to the 13th century. Many famous names throughout history have found themselves at Lancaster Castle at some point, including Robert Bruce, Prince Charles Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie), King William of Orange, and Napolean.
This strong sense of history is juxtaposed with a thoroughly modern programme of culture and entertainment. From the Dukes multiplex to the Storey Art Gallery, Lancaster has something for everyone. Even the sports fans are well catered for with the Ashton Golf Centre and the Lancaster University Centre for Sport.
There are plenty of activities to keep children and adults busy, from children's play areas (The Zone is a 4 tiered soft play area) to Taylor's Funland and the Leighton Moss Nature Reserve.
For those who like to shop, you won't be disappointed. Lancaster offers a wealth of high street shops and shopping centres, as well as farmers' markets and specialist gift emporia. There are also a wide range of cafe's and restaurants in which you can take a well-earned break from the stress of the high street.
If one day isn't enough - and with all the activities to do and sights to see it may well not be – there are plenty of fine hotels in Lancaster. From city centre accomodation to luxury hotels outside the bustle of the town centre, there is sure to be a perfect place for you. One of the best hotels in the area is the
Lancaster House Hotel, a four star venue with 99 bedrooms and an award-winning restaurant.
This city is immersed in history, yet boasts a series of contemporary activities suitable for all ages. Whether you are on a voyage of historical discovery, or just fancy a fun day out, Lancaster has the best of both worlds.
