The summer is a fantastic time to go on holiday, and why shouldn't it be? But a number of things can make it stressful before it begins, so here are a few tips to help you avoid any problems and relax on holiday this year.

A holiday is a treat, a way to relax after a stressful few months, or a hectic year, but many people can forget this, and simply can't unwind on their holiday, which means that they won't come back as refreshed as they could have from their holiday. However, there are ways that you can survive the preparations for a summer holiday, and even have a good time while you're away.

One of the first things that people struggle with after booking their holiday is arranging basic things, such as booking time off work, asking a friend or neighbour to look after any pets or plants that they might have. Remember these are very important tasks that must be done not long after the holiday is booked, as it means that they will be organised well in advance of the holiday, and there's nothing more annoying than booking a holiday but then forgetting to inform your boss and your colleagues that you're going to be away for a few weeks.

Another thing that many holidaymakers report as being stressful is packing their holiday suitcase, and several people admit to pacing it the night before, which is a big holiday no-no. Pack your bag a few days in advance, if you've bought new clothes, then make sure you pack them too, and always remember to leave some space in your suitcase for things you will buy on holiday, such as more clothes, gifts, souvenirs and anything else that takes your fancy. Remember to pack only what you need because overloading a suitcase will only lead to a lot of extra stress, such as it not being able to close, and worse still, excess baggage fees at the airport, which are notoriously expensive, and having to pay fees like this before you even fly can lead to your holiday starting off on completely the wrong foot.

If you've got to get up early in order to get to the airport on time, make sure that you set and alarm or even two, so that you will get up at the right time. Hitting the snooze button is not only lazy, but is potentially very dangerous, as time is of the essence. If you've got to travel to get to the airport, make sure you know how you're going to get there, and work out what the quickest route will be for you. If you're driving to the airport, ensure that you know where you can park your car, such as the long term car park, and take a note of where you've parked it and any other documentation.

Once all this has been done, make sure you've dealt with any last-minute details, such as cancelling your milk order, if you have it delivered t your home, arranging for any parcels to be delivered to a neighbour's house, and making sure your house is secure and not wasting electricity whilst you're away. Also, remember to give friends, family or neighbours details of your flights, accommodation and any other useful information should they need to get in touch with you, so remember to include the details of where you are staying, whether it's a hostel or a hotel in Edinburgh city centre.

And now that all these arrangements have been made and all the jobs have been done, you are finally free to go on your holiday, and enjoy it too!
